Disarming Conflict with “yes AND”
I’ve been using a cool technique lately to handle disagreements in the workplace. It’s called the “yes AND” approach, and it’s all about building on someone’s idea instead of shutting it down.
You know how improv groups use this technique to keep ideas flowing? Well, it’s a really powerful tool for keeping ideas alive and building on what the last person said. It’s like a secret handshake that says, ‘Let’s work together and find a solution!’
Instead of saying ‘yes BUT’ when you disagree, which can come across as confrontational, try saying ‘yes AND’ and adding your own thoughts. For example, if a colleague suggests a new approach to a project that you don’t agree with, instead of saying ‘yes BUT that won’t work,’ you could say ‘yes AND I think we could also consider {your alternative approach}’
By using ‘yes AND,’ you’re showing that you’re open to collaboration and working together to find a solution. This can help create a more positive and collaborative work environment where everyone feels heard and valued.
Of course, there will still be times when conflict can’t be avoided, but using the ‘yes AND’ technique as a first step can help prevent it from escalating. Ultimately, this approach can help you build stronger relationships with your colleagues and create a more positive work environment. So next time you find yourself in a tense situation, give ‘yes AND’ a try and see how it can make a difference!
